Parent & Family engagement
Yancey County Schools believe the education of children is a partnership between home and school. Since parents and families are the first teachers of all children, Yancey County Schools encourage and support consistent and continued involvement of parents and families in the educational process. It is our belief this relationship is extremely important in fostering and improving educational achievement.
Additionally parent and family engagement is a critical component of student academic achievement and school improvement. Our goal is to establish and cultivate a partnership between the home and the school to support learning for all students in every school. Research from the National Parent Teacher Association has shown that when parents are involved and engaged in their children's education the following results occur: higher grades and test scores; higher graduation rates; better school attendance; increased motivation and self-esteem; lower rates of suspension; decreased use of drugs and alcohol; fewer instances of violent behavior.
Being involved in your child's education is as easy as .....attending parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and parent nights; contacting teachers or staff when you have a concern about your child; volunteering in your child's class or school when possible; checking your child's book bag daily for home-school communication; making sure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time daily; helping your child complete his/her homework assignments; reading with your child nightly; and providing a study space for your child which includes needed materials.
The Yancey County Board of Education believes Title I parent and family involvement in the design and implementation of the Title I program will increase the effectiveness of the program and contribute significantly to the success of children.
